I have seen recently a lot of students coming in and from the start have no focus and start the slippery road to poor attendence and failure right from the start. We work with these students as much as we can through mentoring coaching and whatever customer skills we can muster. You show as much as you can that you care through action not just words but the line to following the SOP's needs to be maintained. When I started here one of the established instructors Dan Poor put it best. Here we use a method that is used very effectively in the military and the medical fields. We tell them; we show them and then we let them. All different styles are utilized just not all at the same time. It seems to me that it is up to us on what to use as far as activities to make that happen. Talking to your fellow instructors and your superiors and whatever recourse that you has available is helpful. Always keep searching and never stop trying… >>>

I appreciate your input and will strive to enforce the standards in a consistent manner but with care. I believe you have to set goals but need to temper that with what will help the student understand that you care enough to have high expectations of them

We all at times need to enforce standards. How do we know how to enforce? should we follow to the letter or do we show a lenient approach?

I teach at a post secondary school where you would think that you do not have to be a babysitter. We have a large number of students that are severely challenged by organizational skills that makes it very hard for them to be successfull. It is a delicate balance between being helpful and baysitting. I find that a solid syllabus at the begining and reinforcement of that is most helpful in keeping them focused. Trying to stay on track is important but you must be willing to be flexible because every class is different in make up.
