This module made me think more about how much value can come from a learner’s background and life experiences, even when those experiences aren’t directly related to their career. I want to apply this by helping learners recognize the skills they’ve developed through those experiences and find ways to communicate those strengths in a way employers can understand.

One thing that stood out to me from this module was how easy it can be to make assumptions about someone based on an assessment or their communication style. I want to be more intentional about asking questions and getting to know the learner before deciding what something means or what career path might be best for them.

I learned that communication could mean different things to different people, and that I shouldn’t automatically assume that someone’s silence, body language, or tone means they are disengaged or uninterested. I want to be more mindful of this in my work by slowing down, asking questions, and making sure I understand where a learner is coming from before I make assumptions.

This module reinforced for me how important it is to stay curious and avoid making assumptions about a learner’s behavior, communication style, or definition of career success. I plan to apply this by asking more open-ended questions, reflecting on my own biases, and adapting my approach to better understand each learner’s individual values, experiences, and goals.

One thing that stood out to me was how many different ways there are to help learners overcome barriers in their job search, from preparing for employer concerns to exploring self-employment and record relief. I plan to apply this by helping learners focus on practical next steps, build confidence, and recognize that challenges don’t have to prevent them from moving forward.

I learned that confidence can grow when learners have small, realistic goals and recognize the skills they already have. I plan to use this by helping learners break the job search into manageable steps and reminding them of the progress they’ve already made.

I learned that fair chance hiring can help remove barriers for people who may have faced challenges such as criminal history, employment gaps, or discrimination. I want to apply this by helping learners identify fair chance employers and focus on their strengths, growth, and qualifications rather than letting their past define their opportunities.

This module helped me understand that behaviors like avoidance, mistrust, or low motivation may be connected to past trauma rather than a lack of effort or interest. In my role, I can apply this by approaching learners with patience and empathy while helping them recognize setbacks as part of the process and focusing on the things they can control.

This module reminded me that there's no "one-size-fits-all" approach to career development. Every student has different experiences and circumstances that influence the choices they make, so it's important to really listen before offering guidance. I think that's something I can apply every day in Career Services when working with students from different backgrounds and at different stages of their career journey.

I liked the idea that career development isn't always a straight path. The people we meet, the experiences we have, and even unexpected opportunities can all influence where we end up. I think that's something I can remind students of when they're feeling unsure about their next step or worried that they don't have everything figured out yet.
