About me

I've been a career educator for over 20 years. I currently serve as the Academic Coordinator for Brookstone College of Business and continue to be active in the classroom as a Business Instructor. My motto is "A student doesn't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." I was honored to receive the Career College Association National Teacher of the Year award in 2001. I just love teaching!

Activity

Hi Richard, I concur! Some students are just not motivated at all, and we as educators have to do what we can to get them excited to become motivated. I have had unmotivated students to talk with the placement coordinator so that they can understand their strong potential for professional employment in their field. Patricia
Hi Shoukat, I am sure if you and when you witness cheating, you will reprimand the student. Some students are sneaky, and they do things quickly before they get caught. Patricia
Hi Rick, I too have seen instructors lose their jobs due to befriending students. The student/teacher relationship should be strictly business. Patricia
Hi Stephen, Cell phones can be our biggest enemy in the classroom. Students use the cell phone in a variety of ways to cheat...texting to get answers, utilizing the internet to get answers, having prepared notes in notepad on the cell phone. It is a very smart tactic to have cell phones put away during test time. Patricia
Hi Rachelle, I love graduate guest speakers. They really do serve as super motivators to students, especially students who are about to quit. Patricia
Hi John, You are on point when it comes to getting buy in from students. Students want to know how they are going to benefit from the course. Patricia
Hi Francisco, Most students know when you are bluffing your way through a subject/concept. You are right, admit that you do not know, find the answer, and share the answer at the next class meeting. Patricia
Hi Karne, You have a policy in place, make sure to enforce the policy. It should be some type of repersussion in the policy so that students are discouraged about using their cell phones and laptops during class time. Patricia
Hi Karne, Staring at the student and not saying a word works. The student gets it. It is super that you follow up with the student after class to let the student know that the type of behavior is unacceptable. Patricia
Hi Shana, Different versions of the tests is certainly a great way to minimize cheating. Different versions of the test can be done easily with today's technology. Patricia
