About me

I've been a career educator for over 20 years. I currently serve as the Academic Coordinator for Brookstone College of Business and continue to be active in the classroom as a Business Instructor. My motto is "A student doesn't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." I was honored to receive the Career College Association National Teacher of the Year award in 2001. I just love teaching!

Hi Qadar, The first day is the day to make a positive impression. Students are very judgemental and believe or not, they begin to judge you even before they are enrolled in your class. Patricia
Hi Susan, A guest speaker can certainly shed a lot of light on what is going on in the workplace as it pertains to the career field. Students enjoy having guest speakers, and they are truly a valuable resource. Patricia
Hi Tiffany, I also like to share with students how they can use what is learned in the classroom on the job to get buy in from the students. Patricia
Hi Rebecca, Great response. We simply should lead by example. Topics should be kept strictly professional. Patricia
Hi Karen, Older mature experienced students can certainly shed a lot of light when it comes to thinking critically. Younger students can really learn a lot from the older crowd. Patricia
Hi Pam, What a creative way to make such a sad topic interersting and fun. Visuals are always enjoyed and received well from students. Patricia
Hi Hilary, I like using classified ads to show jobs that are related to their field, and I also like to mention the potential income in the field every opportunity I get. Patricia
Hi Alan, Students tend to really enjoy role playing. Role playing is a great critical thinking activity. Students show what they have learned in a very creative way through role playing. Patricia

Students are not the only people who will do things to be labeled as one of the favorites.  Some instructors will go to great lengths so that they are thought of as being the favorite instructor.  Are you one of those instructors that will bend policies, give easy tests, do not assign homework, dismiss class early, allow students to be out of control in the classroom, allow students to get off of course topic and talk about personal issues, go to the students level, etc. so that your students will love you?  I am the type of instructor that will… >>>

Hi Jesse, You are definitely correct! ALL instructors should be on the same page and enforce rules. It really makes the instructor(s) enforcing the rules out to be the bad guy. We are not doing these students any favors by letting them break rules. In the workplace that Con-men/women mentality will get you fired. Patricia
