About me

My name is Alverine Rawlins Kan or Allie/Al for short.  I possess a master’s Degree in Business Administration and I am attached to one of the  high schools in the territory of the United States Virgin Islands. In today’s world, students are exposed to a wealth of information on the internet, and versatile with the computer at a very young age.  For instructors, the traditional ways of teaching are not very effective as before, and teaching is becoming more and more demanding, as  we try to incorporate and utilize different methods of teaching to meet the technological, general needs and learning styles of this generation.  I am a business teacher and so my focus spans across math, communication and technology.  Each day I am charged with the responsibility to ensure that my teaching strategies are of such that no student is left behind, and that each of those students regardless of their background, strengths, deficiencies  are able to participate, learn, and contribute to the learning process.

In lieu of the above, I chose this course to find additional ways of engaging my students, especially those who may struggle with some form of deficiency in learning.  At times I have to spend a lot of time preparing effective lesson plans to ensure that students have the knowledge and skills required for them to function in a very competitive world.  As business teachers, we try to go above and beyond to make these students feel included in the learning equation. I am also affiliated with the Stem Institute and NAF Academy, where our goal is to train and prepare students to pursue studies in Technology, Math and Engineering, ensuing that they are compatible with other young people to take up jobs in these areas, as there is a high demand for them.

Comment on Lisa Johnson's post: I

I completely agree with you Lisa. It is so important for teachers to feel confident and well trained in integrating core subjects like math, science and English into their Career and Educational Curriculum. Providing professional development opportunities, equip educators with the tools and strategies they need to effectively highlight the relevance of these subjects in the real world contexts.

Shareen, you have mentioned a fundamental point about the importance of aligning core academic subjects with CTE programs.  When students see the connection between what they learn in academic classes and their CTE course work, it not only enhances their understanding but also increases their engagement and motivation. This alignment also helps students to recognize the applicability of their education in the real world making learning more significant to them.

In studying this model, I have learnt that ‘Alignment with Academic Core Standards,  is a process that  entails the validation of  educational curriculum, teaching strategies and assessments and ensuring that they are in alignment  with established academic standards. These standards list the knowledge and skills that students are expected to acquire at various grade levels in different subject areas.  Here is how I will effectively apply alignment with academic core standards in my curriculum: In the first instance, I will write clear objectives for each lesson that definitely reference the aligned standards.  I will also prepare instructional activities that will… >>>

Teamwork not only enhances the quality of instructions but learning environment, but also nurtures a supportive learning environment where education can share insights and strategies. Engaging with community members can add another layer of value. Their real world experiences and feedback can provide important context and relevance to standards ensuring that students are being prepared for the demands of the job market.

Comment on Allyse Appel's post: Comment on Allyse Appel's post: I strongly support your holisic approach on high quality CTE curriculumsiting on intersection of field backed technical standards.  I also like your emphasis on the continuous improvement outlined in the CTE framework. By linking curriculum development to data, advisory input and labor market information, we can ensure that programs remain relevant and responsive to the evolving needs of the industry

With regards to industry validated technical standards, I have learnt that the standards in caption relate to benchmarks and yardsticks established by industry professionals and or organizations that define the skills, knowledge and proficiencies required for specific job or fields. These standards play a major role in ensuring that educational programs are in line with the needs of employers and the preparedness for the job market.

Some key features are:

Firstly, standards should be created or validated by professionals, trade association, and industry organization that possess understanding of the skills and capabilities necessary for the… >>>

Comment on Luis Valles's post: Totally agree with you.  If people do not work together to build trust, define a shared vision, breakdown communication barriers, any technical system or oranizational framework implemented will not function holistically

This course provided a lot of insights for me when using AI assistance.  One of the things that I gravitated towards is: When you provide AI practice problems it quickly figures out the patterns, difficulty and sturcture.  This could assist my students in accomplishing mastery when instructing them about concepts relating to Compound Interest and Investment, creating comprehensive monthly Budgets that includes hidden costs (insurance, depreciation, gas, maintenance etc).

The attribute of introspective, integrating skilled questioning in the classroom, using intuition and encouraging students who are doubtful about doing something, corroborate the fact that effective learning goes beyond simply delivering content. It involves creating an environment where students feel valued, supported and motivated to learn.  Incorporating these skills lead to a more energetic, and receptive classroom, nurturing a classroom of inquiry and collaboration

I was particularly drawn to the statement' Highly effective instructors know that they are not teaching one class of 20 students; they are teaching 20 classes with one student in each.' This reinforces the importance of differentiated instructions and the detection that each student has unique needs, learning styles and backgrounds. For example, some students may learn best through visual aid, while others may prefer hands on activities or auditory instruction.  An effective instructor identifies these differences and adjusts their teaching strategies accordingly. At the beginning of the course, I will distribute surveys to gather information about students' interests, learning… >>>
