It's important to keep discussions structured and clear, but to also fit in 3-5 activities per week if possible to keep the learners engaged. Don't be afraid to try new things to help everyone get out of their comfort zones. 

Active learning is a great classroom tool but it requires the attention of the students and the teacher. It may take extra time out of class, but benefits those who are able to dial in to the activity.

Many of us learn best by actually doing things that relate to what we are learning. Active learning is so important because it helps apply the knowledge students have been absorbing, it helps things "click" so to say.

Don't let your anxieties get the best of you. Prepare for your first days teaching by going over materials, stay present and kind day of. 

Empathy and compassion go a long way and with students its important to lead with these qualities. Set clear expectations, create a relationship with each student and relate to them in a way that acknowledges we are all human. 

Impressions are everything; whether they are a 5 second interaction or 5 minutes, how you hold yourself and portray yourself outwards can leave either the wrong or right impression on someone. 

I have learned to be clear about assignment deadlines and that activities that involve teamwork during course teachings will help keep students engaged.
