I think early and often communication is the key!!!

This is certainly true.  Usually, it takes contact that is direct and to the point about grades.  Usually with a copy to their advisor.  Then they tell of their problems, personal, technical and something can be done to move the student forward.

I have found that motivating online students is a lot harder than classroom-based ones. Can any of you share somethig that has been successfull on bringing an online student back to class?

Online wallflowers are very hard to detect and reach. I've had many students who only participate on mandatory conversations but work realy hard on the assignments and are excellent students, while others are just unninterested. Does anybody have a suggestion for engaging them?

I try to make them feel comfortable in the class, This might mean initially asking them questions that are looking for opinsion instead of right or wrong answers. I also try to acknowledge them to the class if they are on the right track or produced some good work. This often will develop a sense of confidence that will turn into participation.

An overview of the training does bring up both concepts and challenges we as instuctors all face. It did give me answers on how to navigate the classroom better.

Tell them to relax and be confident.
